Arthur Harold Berry

Mr. Arthur Harold Berry born on February 13, 1931, passed away on March 24, 2017.


He started a career at Greenway's Bicycle Shop on Bragg Boulevard. He was owner/operator of Art's Motorcycle Shop on Murchison Road and later owner/operator of Arthur H. Berry Trucking on Ramsey Street.


Arthur was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Dora Frances Hayes; father, James Albert Berry;  mother, Mavis Irene Jones; 3  brothers, John William Berry, James Albert Berry, Jr. and Oscar Allen Berry and step-daughter Sandra Giles Ashley.


Arthur is survived by his wife of 8 years, Patricia Smith Berry; 3 children, Mavis Berry Blanchard (Steve); Delores Berry Arno (James) and James H. Berry; step-children Willard Alan Giles and Michael Doug Giles; 5 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and 8 step-great grandchildren.


His greatest thrill was motorcycle racing until he was injured in a fall in 1961 at the Champion Speedway in Fayetteville.


Arthur's greatest community contribution was assisting in the development of Cumberland County's Westarea Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Chief for many years and involvement with expanding fire protection to the northern part of Cumberland County and the Linden community by supporting the building of two new fire stations; one on Ramsey Street and one on Main Street in Linden.

 
Arthur was an active member of the Colliers Chapel Church in Linden.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children's Hospital and the Cape Fear Valley Hospice.
