Retired Master Sgt. Van "Tex" Oren Newton, 90, of Fayetteville passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2016.

Mr. Newton served 30 years, 6 months, 2 days, and 29 minutes active duty military status. Over 17 years with the 82nd Airborne Division. He served in Germany, Okinawa, Thailand, and Vietnam. His awards and decorations included the Bronze Star and the Master Parachutist Badge.

He was born to the late Melvin and Alice Newton on September 11, 1926 in Joaquin, Texas. After retirement, he worked with Healy Wholesale and Highland Country club. He was a lifetime member of the 82nd Airborne Association, a lifetime associate member of Special Forces, R.M.A., D.A.V., and the V.F.W. He was a Mason and a Shriner.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Newton of the home; daughters, Cheryl Nunn and husband, Ron of Angier and Gail Wellington and husband, Donald of Fayetteville; his grandchildren, Sara Williams and husband, Jeremy, Elizabeth Freitas and husband, Brian, Rachel Wellington, and Tyler Blomquist; his great grandchildren, Kayla, Calvin, Dianthe, Aislynn, and Jeremy.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm tonight, Thursday, October 20, 2016 at the funeral home. A funeral service with full military honors will be held at 11 am Friday, October 21, 2016 in Rogers and Breece Funeral Home Chapel. Inurnment will be held at 2 pm Monday, October 24, 2016 in Cumberland Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
