Gus S Poulos

Gus S. Poulos, 94, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at Cape Fear Valley Hospital .

Gus was born March 2, 1921, in Nostimo, Evrytania, Greece; son of Spyridon and Eugenia Stathopoulos. He went to Athens in 1936 where he went to school and worked. In 1948 he entered the Greek Army and became a radio operator. He emigrated from Greece and moved to Fayetteville on July 4, 1951 where he began working at the Rainbow Restaurant. He later worked at the Royal Grill and then owned the New York Restaurant. Mr. Poulos was very active at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church and served on the parish council. He was an integral part of the Greek organizations Ahepa and Velouchi. After retiring he enjoyed his remaining years relaxing and doing what he loved best; reading and learning.

Mr. Poulos was a loving grandfather and a kind, gentle, humble and loving man who was loved by all who knew him and was adored by his family. He recently became a great grandfather when grandson Dino and wife Emily had a son, Angelo Andrew Pappas. He was a man of great faith and loved God. He worked hard all of his life and was devoted to his family and his church. He never forgot his homeland, Greece, and worked tirelessly with the Velouchi and Ahepa organizations to help Greeks here and in Greece.

Mr. Poulos was preceded in death by his son Jimmy Poulos.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Penny Kappas Poulos; daughter, Mary Pappas and husband Rev. Angelo Pappas, of Myrtle Beach, SC; son, Spiros Poulos, of Fayetteville; brothers, Chris Poulos and wife Melba, John Poulos and wife Kay, all of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Chris Pappas, Dino Pappas and wife Emily, and Penny Pappas Walsh and husband Martin; as well as many nephews and nieces.

Visiting hours will be Friday July 3, 2015 from 5-7 PM with the Trisagion service at 6:30 PM at the Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church.

Funeral services for Mr. Poulos will be held Saturday, July 4, 2015 at 11:00 at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church with Rev. Father Alex Papagikos, Rev. Father Angelo Pappas, and Rev. Father Athanasios Haros officiating. Interment will follow at Fayetteville Memorial Cemetery.
