William T. Hatley, born in Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away leaving behind a life defined by service, devotion, and quiet determination.
At age 18, William joined the United States Army and retired 31 years later as a Sergeant Major, the highest non-commissioned officer rank. He served two tours in the Korean War and one tour in the Vietnam War, honoring his country with dedication and leadership.
William was most proud of his family and is survived by his four sons, who were the greatest accomplishment of his life. William was married only once, sharing more than 65 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Ruth (Sussingham) Hatley. Their life together was built on loyalty, commitment, and care. For more than 30 years, William was a devoted caregiver to Ruth. It was the hardest job he ever had, yet he never complained or asked for help.
He never cared much for sports or hobbies, but he loved working with his hands. William spent countless hours repairing his cars, his home, and helping neighbors with their own projects. Even into his 90s, he could be found tearing down a car engine in the driveway, determined to fix things himself, often calling manufacturers directly for advice. Outside of family, his greatest enjoyment was chopping wood, which he found both relaxing and fulfilling. He continued right up until Ruth’s passing last year. When William passed, he left behind nearly five years’ worth of chopped wood, a quiet symbol of his work ethic and perseverance.
William T. Hatley will be remembered as a man who served faithfully, loved deeply, and lived humbly.
