Virginia Godwin Obituary

Mrs. Virginia DardenGodwin, 86, of Fayetteville passed away on Friday, September 28, 2018 at her home.

She was born in Fayetteville on December 14, 1931 to Louis  and Leah Hassell Darden.  She was known to her family and childhood friends as "Tookie".

She attended Linden High School, where she met her husband, Rubin Godwin.  She graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1951.

Virginia worked at Methodist College as a bookkeeper and the assistant to the comptroller for 20 years.

After her retirement in 1995, Virginia and Rubin began to dabble in antiques.  That became a second career for them both.  They were the owners of Senior Venture Antiques and Antiques and Uniques of Eastover and downtown Fayetteville.

Virginia was a lifelong member of Gardner's United Methodist Church.  She also was a member of the Woman's Club of Fayetteville.  She enjoyed playing cards with her grandchildren, beach trips with the family and watching her grandchildren's sporting and dance events.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, as well as her brothers, Ben, Paul and Tommy Darden, and her sisters, Eleanor Frazier, Mary Lou Barnes and Chloe Darden.

She is survived by her daughters, Gayle Franks (George) of Fayetteville, Darla Renee Cole (Mike) of Sanford and Joy Crowe (Patrick) of Carolina Lakes; six grandchildren, Virginia Fitt (Aaron), Sarah Franks (Daniel), Joe Franks, Cadoc Kirkpatrick, Daniel Cole and Hannah Crowe; two sisters-in-law, Allene Stephens and Roberta Darden; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was expecting her first great grandchild in December.

A funeral service will be held at 1 pm Monday, October 1, 2018 in Gardner's United Methodist Church with Rev. Herbert Lowry and Rev. Roy Hilburn officiating.  Burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 11:30 am to 12:45 pm prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heritage Square Historic Society 225 Dick St., Fayetteville, NC 28301 or Gardners United Methodist Church 4555 Rosehill Rd., Fayetteville, NC 28311.
