Thomas “Tommy” Cashwell Obituary

Thomas “Tommy” Andrew Cashwell, age 71, met Jesus at the Pearly Gates on Saturday, July 5, 2025. He passed peacefully at home after an extended illness, with his loving wife, Janice, by his side.

Tommy was preceded in death by his loving parents, the Reverend Tommie and Viola Tew Cashwell; his sisters, Marcie, Shirley, Ellon, and Margaret; and his late wife, Tonda.

Tommy grew up in the Hope Mills and Cumberland areas and was raised in the Church of God. He attended Hope Mills School and graduated from South View High School in 1974. During high school, he participated in many musicals where he always excelled. He loved playing softball, basketball, and football and was a formidable opponent in any game. Everyone loved him for his wit and fun-loving spirit.

He spent 31 years in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and retired from NAPA Auto Parts. A talented musician, Tommy sang with several groups including The Kensman Quartet, The Huntley Singers, The Choraleers Quartet, The Heritage Quartet, and most recently, The Revelators Quartet. Tommy was known for playing the invisible trumpet. He was honored with the Living Legend Award by the Eastern NC Quartet Convention. A devoted Southern Gospel music fan, Tommy also served as a pastor in The Church of God throughout his ministry life.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Janice Chason Cashwell; daughter, Crystal Cashwell (Raymond Blue); grandchildren: Janae’, Zahra, Kaila, and Damara; great-grandchildren: Arayla and Kamarion; son, Ryan Cashwell (Katelyn); grandson, Levi; bonus daughter, Nikki (Anthony Moore), and grandchildren: Jada, Anthony, and JaMaya; bonus daughter, Molly “Flossie” Sanchez (Mike), and grandchildren: Gavin and Weston; bonus son, Chris Barnes (Hillary), and grandchildren: Titus and Eliza. He is also survived by his sisters: Juanita Cashwell Ferguson (Charles) and Earlene Kerr, along with a large extended family of nieces and nephews. 

The family will receive friends on Friday, July 11, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Rivers of Living Water Church, 1764 Bingham Drive, Fayetteville, NC 28304. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Johnny Rivera, Reverend Aaron Wilson, Reverend Tim Gore, Reverend Gary W. Leviner Jr., Reverend Ken Williams, and Reverend Archie Barringer officiating. Burial will follow at Pittman Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 4921 Pittman Grove Church Road, Raeford, NC 28376.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Pittman Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 4921 Pittman Grove Church Road, Raeford, NC 28376, or to the Rivers of Living Water Building Fund, 1764 Bingham Drive, Fayetteville, NC 28304.
