Sylvia Kiang Obituary

In memory of Sylvia Kiang, who passed away on June 12, 2022, at the age of 104. She was born in 1918 in a small town near Shanghai, China. Sylvia and her husband, Lu-yu Kiang, grew up in the same town. Their families knew each other, and Sylvia and Lu-yu were married in 1942. Their son, Daniel, was born in 1943. Her husband left China to study in the US in 1947 and was unable to return after the Communist takeover of China in 1949. The family was separated until 1958 when they were finally reunited in Okinawa, Japan. They worked for the US Army in Japan until 1975 when they were transferred to Fort Bragg. Her husband indulged his talent for writing and published many articles and a book. Sylvia was a very talented artist and produced many works which were often exhibited publicly.

Sylvia’s husband passed away in 2008, followed by her son, Daniel, in 2011. She chose to move into a retirement home. She devoted herself to charitable endeavors, such as Dr. Lu, Sylvia, and Daniel Kiang Scholarship for Chinese Students at Cumberland Community Foundation, which provides academic scholarships to deserving university students. Sylvia had many friends and will be dearly missed by them. They rest in the comfort of knowing that Sylvia is reunited in heaven with her husband and the son they loved.
