Stacy Wade Whittington

FAYETTEVILLE - Stacy Wade Whittington, born October 21, 1937, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2024.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Betty Whittington; his children, Lisa Whittington Stewart (Jimmy), Douglas Whittington (Barrie), Jamie Brown (Michelle), Harold Brown, and Jo Ann Cabaniss (Scott); his grandchildren, Trey Stewart (Tracy), Zach Brown (Haley), Justin Brown, Samantha Brown, Casey Cabaniss, Mallie Whittington, David Whittington, and Caroline Cabaniss; his great-grandson, James Stewart IV; his loving sister, Ethyl Stone; and his nephews and nieces, Danny Whittington, Phil Whittington, Carolyn Weaver, Lina McDonald, Cindy Davis, Beverly Gregory, Tim Whittington, and Ronnie Womble.

Stacy was preceded in death by his parents, Shep and Eva Whittington, and his siblings, Thelma Parrish, Cleo Temple, Mable Newton, Sarah Whittington, Bill Whittington, George Whittington, Arthur Whittington, and Raeford Whittington.

As the youngest of ten children, he often shared heartwarming stories of growing up in a hardworking Christian farming family in Harnett County. Stacy had a distinguished 33-year career with Sears & Roebuck, excelling in both store and regional management. His career began in downtown Fayetteville, and he and Betty moved several times, making lifelong friends in Greensboro, Greenville, and Jacksonville before retiring to his much-loved Kings Grant neighborhood golf course in Fayetteville.

An avid golfer, Stacy often shot his age and enjoyed bird hunting with his beloved Brittany Spaniels. He and Betty also cherished traveling abroad and enjoying the North Carolina coast with family and friends. Time spent in Cedar Point brought dear friends and the joys of boating and fishing.

Music was a great passion for Stacy; he played guitar and sang country music with the Green Valley Boys and the Sudan Temple String Band. He was also a dedicated member of Cedar Falls Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir. In addition to his service in the U.S. Army at Fort Knox, KY, Stacy was a proud Shriner with the Sudan Temple in New Bern, NC. He was honored with the prestigious “Order of the Long Leaf Pine” by Governor Jim Hunt on August 27, 1983, in recognition of his significant contributions to his community.

A celebration of Stacy’s life will be held at Cedar Falls Baptist Church, 6181 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville, NC 28311, on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at 12:00 PM. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM prior to the service, and a reception will follow.

Stacy was a loving husband, caring father, proud grandfather, great-grandfather, and dedicated friend to many. His legacy of love, devotion, and joy will be deeply missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriners Children's Hospitals (www.shrinerschildrens.org) or to the music ministry of Cedar Falls Baptist Church.
