Shirley Faye Suggs Newburg, 76, of Fayetteville passed away on November 27th, 2021.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Hardy and Sara “Essie” Suggs; son, James “Jamie” Howard Monroe Jr.; brothers, Elton Suggs and Randy Suggs of Lumberton; long time companion, Bobby Draughon; and stepson at heart, Eddie Draughon of Fayetteville.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Angie Monroe Hall and spouse Bill Hall of Tar Heel; son, Matthew Monroe and spouse, Julie of Lumberton; brothers, Buddy Suggs and spouse Ann Suggs of Lumberton, Ron Suggs of Lumberton, and Carson Suggs of Lumberton; grandchildren, Daniel Monroe, Andrew Hall, Cameron Hall, Heather Monroe, John Monroe, Mary Monroe, Liza Melvin, Lexi Melvin, Kelly Monroe, Destinee Haro-Estrada, Michelle Monroe; and about 20 great grandchildren.
Shirley was born in Robeson County. She served in the US Army and was stationed in Washington, DC at Walter Reed. She completed cosmetology, after leaving the service. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor while serving in the Army in 1977 and was one of the first patients to have her type of surgery on the brain. Her medical documents and scans were cased in glass for viewing at Walter Reed Hospital. She was also diagnosed with Thyroid cancer and both her thyroids had to be removed. She was told if she lived 5 years, she would live a long life and she did at 76 years. Shirley loved the Lord and Savior and gave her life to him. She was ready to go Home when he called her over.
A Graveside service will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at Baptist Church Cemetery.
