Sandra Marie Walko, 80, of Fayetteville, NC passed away peacefully in her home on October 9, 2024.
Born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, she married a career Army Officer and as a faithful and dedicated wife traveled to duty stations in Bankock, Thailand; Bogota, Colombia; and numerous posts throughout the US. She raised two sons, Dennis and Jeff, who respectively served as US Marine and Army Paratrooper. Sandy loved the military life with a passion- she was the epitome of an Army wife.
She was an accomplished pianist and singer; loved baking and gourmet cooking. She had an eye for interior decoration, flower arrangement, and aggressively pursued her hobby of making jeweled Christmas decorations. Losing her first husband to a fatal aviation accident and her two veteran sons to medical causes, she was an inspiration to others who face tragedy yet continue life with untiring vigor and a smile.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dennis Walko; brothers, Leon and John Stuertz; sister, Kay Stuertz; and daughter in law, Lori Johnson. Also, her grandchildren, Keelan, Riley, and Lexi Johnson – who were a major focus of her love and affection, and who brought her great joy as they grew to adults of intellect and character.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home from 1 to 2 pm.
Funeral to be scheduled for Arlington National Cemetery; date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the cancer society in Sandra's Honor.
