Robert Davis McCloud

Robert Davis McCloud, 87, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 16, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. A loving husband, devoted father and beloved grandfather, Robert was a pillar not only to the McCloud family, but his community.

Born on May 31, 1938, near Warrenton, Virginia, Robert was son to James Edgar and Regina Roberta Carder McCloud and brother to three others: James, John and Kenneth. He served his community for decades as an optometrist and was a proud member of the Cape Fear Valley Scottish Clans.

Robert was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force in July 1961. He later enrolled in classes at Pembroke State University in North Carolina before being admitted to Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. After graduating in 1973, Robert joined his father-in-law, Dr. William Bray Whitehead, in optometry practice in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He later went into solo practice following Dr. Whitehead’s retirement.

During his leave after his tour of duty in Saudi Arabia, Robert met Priscilla Ruth Whitehead. The two married on January 1, 1961, in Fayetteville, North Carolina and share five children: Caroline (Ahren) Self, Edward (Jacqueline), Janet (Mark) Firmani, Annette (Jarrel) Jimmerson, and Cheryl (Mark) Helm, of whom he was immensely proud.

Robert was married again to Debra D. Carter in September 1992, in Williamsburg, Virginia. He is preceded in death by Debra, as well as his brothers, James Marvin, John Edgar and Kenneth Lee.

Robert is survived by his five children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The McCloud family is hosting a viewing at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home on Friday, June 27 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The funeral is Saturday, June 28 at noon at the same location: 500 Ramsey St, Fayetteville, NC 28301.
