Peggie Jackson Obituary

Peggie W. Jackson passed away to her heavenly home at the age of 101 on May 15, 2022, while living at the Landings of Swansboro Assisted Living in Swansboro, NC.

Peggie lived in Fayetteville, NC since 1945, first in the Bonnie Doone neighborhood and then in 1952 she bought a farm off of South Reilly Rd with her husband of 60 years, the late, Preston D. Jackson. She was born on April 5, 1921, in Somerset, Pa, the oldest child of Adolph Gephart Weyand and Emily Cook Weyand.

She graduated high school in June of 1938. In January 1943, she felt the call to serve our country and joined the Woman’s Auxiliary Army Corps as a civilian. Her father had served during WWI. Her brothers, Adolph and Bill Weyand were already serving in the army and a younger sister, Sylvia, who was born right before her enlistment. She was stationed at Kirtland Air Force base in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In June of 1943, congress authorized the Auxiliary Corps to have military status and it became the Woman’s Army Corps. Peggie then became a corporal. She met and married CPL Preston D. Jackson, a native of Fayetteville, NC. He was from a farming family, and she always wanted to marry a farmer so she could grow vegetables and learn to can. A few months after marriage, she learned she was pregnant with her first child, Emily Louise. She was honorably discharged September of 1944 and returned to Somerset to give birth and await Preston’s service completion in 1945.

After moving to Fayetteville, she gave birth to Preston Jackson, Jr., John David, Peggie Ann, Sarah Rose, Carol Lynn and Norma Kay. She had 7 children between 1945 and 1959. Peggie always made home cooked meals and many cakes and cookies for them.

She was a lifetime Lutheran and has served God for over 74 years as a member of St. James Lutheran Church. Over the years, she joyfully served on the fellowship committee coordinating meals. She also was involved many years with the St. James Quilters.

Peggie worked several years with the Cumberland County Tax Office and made many friends while there. During the last days of her life, all of her children were there to visit and say their goodbyes. Even to her last breath, she was stubborn and witty.

Peggie is blessed with six living children, nine grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. The last words of wisdom she imparted was to her great grandson when he visited her, “Be kind to other people and they will be kind to you.”

She will be remembered and missed by all who knew her for years or just from a short conversation.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 Pm on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at St. James Lutheran Church, 1424 Morganton Rd Fayetteville, NC 28305.
