Mrs. Bettye Jean Johnson Hyde, 82, passed away on January 31, 2025.
Mrs. Hyde was predeceased in death by her husband, Johnnie Willie Hyde, Sr.; her parents, Elmer and Ethel Lee Johnson; siblings, Jane Johnson, Leroy Johnson, Hattie Johnson, Dororthy Weeden, Barbara Loving, Sally Pearlie Anderson and Bernice Hyman.
Mrs. Hyde is survived by her sons, Johnnie Hyde, Jr., Christopher Hyde, Andra Hyde (Raquel) and her daughter, Lynnette Hyde. Daughters in love LaRhonda Garrett, Deborah Raeford and Angie Morris; her brother, Roosevelt Johnson, Sr.; her sisters, Mae Frances Wells and Earnestine Johnson; her grandchildren Marc, Demetrice, Phytina, Andra, Jaleena, Shaun, Carl, Eve, Evondra, Jarina, Britteny, Jaeda, Jewel, and Deanna; and a host of dearly loved great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Born in Sheppard, Arkansas to Elmer and Ethel Johnson, the family relocated to East St. Louis, Illinois when Bettye was very young. She grew up there and graduated from Cahokia High School.
As a young adult, Bettye married Johnnie W. Hyde, Sr., on Dec. 11, 1960. Johnnie and Bettye did several tours with the US Army, with most of their time split between California and Germany (2 tours each). During this time, their family grew by four -Johnnie, Jr., Christopher, Andra, and Lynnette are their surviving children.
In the early 1990s, Bettye and Johnnie would legally separate. Bettye then went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in social work from Methodist University. She was pursuing her master’s degree in social work prior to her passing.
Bettye was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She expected you to always do your best, using her God given gift to guide others onto a path of meaningful contribution to society. Throughout her life, Bettye's home was a safe haven with firm limits and love, and if you were willing to listen to her wisdom, you became a blessed part of her forever family. She attended Tabernacle of Faith Ministries and was well loved and respected.
The family will receive friends on Monday, February 10, 2025, at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home from 4 to 4:45 pm. A memorial service will be held at 5 pm in the chapel with Pastor Gary Horne officiating.
