Mavis Yvonne Johnson Obituary

Mavis Gilchrist Johnson, 84, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2020. She was born in Roseboro, NC on May 5, 1936 to the late Bennett and Lillian (Beatty) Gilchrist.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, William Lee Johnson Jr. and her son, Bennett Mitchell Johnson.

Mavis is survived by her daughter, Laura Johnson Millinor and husband, Blake of Hickory, NC; her sister, Brenda Sumner of Raleigh, NC; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mavis earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics from East Carolina University and a Master’s Degree from NC State in Adult Education. She spent 30 years working as an Extension Agent for the North Carolina Cooperative Extension of Cumberland County. Mavis was also an active member of the Hope Mills United Methodist Church.

She will be remembered as a strong, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and aunt who enjoyed spending time with both family and friends. Mavis will be dearly missed.

A Graveside service will be held today at 1 pm at LaFayette Memorial Park with Rev. Dennis Sheppard and Rev. Ellen McCubbin officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Hope Mills United Methodist Church, 4955 Legion Rd, Hope Mills, NC 28348.
