Matthew Moody Smith, Jr.

Matthew Moody Smith, Jr., 86, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, April 7, 2025.
He was preceded in death by his father, Matthew M. Smith, Sr., and his mother, Irene McKethan Smith.

Matthew is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jeannette; his daughter, Michelle Smith Mund, and her husband, Chris; grandsons, Ben Anthony, Jr. and Matthew Mund; great-grandson, Benjamin Howard Anthony III ("Tripp"); and his beloved cat, Felix.

A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Matthew was born on December 22, 1938. He graduated from Fayetteville Senior High School and Presbyterian College. He was an active member and former director of the North Carolina Movers' Association, a Paul Harris Fellow of the Fayetteville Rotary Club, and a dedicated member of Highland Presbyterian Church and the John Wilson Sunday School Class.

Matthew chaired the Fayetteville Rotary Christmas Parade for many years. He was a proud father and grandfather who cherished weekends and summers with family at the cottage at White Lake. He especially loved spending sweltering days on the boat, joyfully teaching friends and family how to waterski.

He never complained about rising before sunrise on summer weekends to pull his daughter, Michelle, skiing. At work, he was often found on a forklift moving anything and everything around his warehouse at the Commercial Merchandise division of M.M. Smith Moving and Storage.

Matthew also enjoyed attending his grandsons' baseball, football, and soccer games. He was a fan of NASCAR racing and Carolina Tar Heels basketball.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the chapel at Highland Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. Following the service, the burial will take place at Cross Creek Cemetery in downtown Fayetteville. The family will receive friends for a short time at the graveside.
