Marvin “Billy” Smith, 86, a lifelong resident of Fayetteville, NC, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025. Born on January 9, 1939, Billy was known for his deep faith, unmatched work ethic, and unwavering devotion to his family and community.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Viola Smith; sister, Virgil Smith; brother and sister-in-law, Mitchell and Carol Smith; and his beloved son, Tracy Smith.
Billy leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 66½ years, Shirley Smith; his children: Billy Smith III, Mark and Denise Smith, and Margeri and Keith Brown. He was a proud grandfather to Meagan and Mike, Shannon and Adam, Jared and Aubrey, Austin and Amanda, and Kathryn and Wally; and a cherished great-grandfather to nine great-grandchildren.
Billy’s strong work ethic was evident from a young age when he began working at Streib’s Drive-In as a teenager. He later attended Louisburg College and met Shirley while she was visiting family in Fayetteville. After only four dates and a year of heartfelt letters, the two married and began a beautiful journey of love, trust, and mutual respect that would span over six decades.
Together, Billy and Shirley raised four children while he worked tirelessly to support the family—selling insurance, delivering fruit and eggs, and eventually founding a successful family business, Rocket Auto Parts. Billy’s life was a testament to integrity, generosity, and persistence. He never did anything halfway. Whether he was providing for his family, lending a hand to a neighbor, or mentoring a young person in need, he gave his all—always.
A lifelong member of Gardner’s Methodist Church, Billy lived his faith through action, service, and humility. His legacy is one of resilience, compassion, and devotion. He was a selfless, kind-hearted man who loved deeply and lived with purpose. His love for Shirley was steadfast, and their marriage stood as a beautiful example of lifelong commitment.
Words cannot fully express the love and gratitude we feel for Billy. We were blessed beyond measure to call him our husband, father, and Pop Pop. His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Gardners Methodist Church on Saturday, July 12th at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall from 1:00 to 2:30 PM prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fayetteville Urban Ministry, Operation Inasmuch, Gardner’s Methodist Church, or the charity of your choice.
