Martin Junior Roberts, 89 years old, passed away on August 27, 2022.
Martin is preceded in death by his father, Wister Bryant Roberts; mother, Mary Davis Roberts; and his wife, Patsy Scearce Roberts. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his daughter, Kelly R. Shaw and husband, Jonathan; Son, Jay Roberts and wife, Janet; grandson, Sean Roberts; Granddaughter, Tiffany Roberts; and special friend, Betty L. Denning.
Born on October 29, 1932, in Ontario, Canada during the depression. Martin grew up in Keeling, VA where he farmed and played baseball at Dan River High School.
He was driving a milk truck when he met Patsy Scearce. They were married in 1956 and in that same year he was drafted into the Army, serving in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was stationed in Germany for three years, where he and Pat enjoyed riding their BMW motorcycle all over the country. In August of 1962, he left the Army and started Robert’s Used Cars in September of that same year and was known as “The Van Man”. After 60 years, the business is still open and ran by his son, Jay Roberts, and his daughter, Kelly R. Shaw. He attended racing events all the way from Martinsville, VA to Daytona, FL. He enjoyed the local tracks and sponsored Tom Usry for many years. He was inducted into the Fayetteville Motor Speedway Hall of Fame in 1997. He had a passion for surf fishing, dancing, camping, and telling jokes. He enjoyed life to the fullest.
The family will greet friends prior the service on Friday, September 2, at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home from 10:30 to 11:45 Am. A Funeral service will be held at 12 PM with Pastor Keith Smith and Pastor Judd Dixon officiating. Burial to follow the service at Lafayette Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project in Martin’s name.
