Maria Velazquez-Constas Obituary

Mrs. Maria Magdalena Velazquez-Constas, 73, of Fayetteville passed away on Friday, August 31, 2018.

Maria was a Marriage and Family Therapist for over 35 years and served faithfully in the community.  She served as the Board President of the Cumberland County Mental Health Association in 1992, Co-Founder and board member of the Hispanic/Latino Center of Cumberland County from 1998-2003, Chairman for the Human Relations Commission for the City of Fayetteville, Co-Chairperson of the Study Circles, Race Relations Initiative in 1998 and the NC Governor's Advisory Board on Hispanic/Latino Affairs Member from 1998-2010, a member of the State Advisory Panel for the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, as well as many others.  She was the Mental Health Regional Lead for the American Red Cross.  Maria received numerous awards throughout her career to include, Human Relations Commissioner of the Year for 1998 and 1999, Latino Diamante Award in 1999, The Medal of the City of Fayetteville for serving on the Fayetteville All American City Task Force and the Champion of the Family Award from NC Marriage and Family Association.

She is survived by her husband, Kimon J. Constas of the home; two sons, Efstratios Constas and wife, Yuko of Alexandria, Va. and Alexander Constas and wife, Shirley of Fayetteville; a daughter, Helen Michaud and husband, Brett of Fayetteville; three sisters, Leo, Maria "Negra" and Milagros; one brother, Francisco "Papo"; and four grandchildren, Isabela, Sofia, Augustus and Maisy.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church with burial to follow in Cross Creek Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6 pm to 7:30 pm Tuesday, September 4, 2018 in Rogers and Breece Funeral Home with the Trisagion Service at 7:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Scholarship Fund, AHEPA 614 Oakridge Ave. Fayetteville, NC 28305.
