Lonnie B. Simmons, 92, of Hope Mills, passed away peacefully at Autumn Care Nursing Home on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Emma Simmons; sister, Ruth Ray; brothers, Edgar Roscoe and Lloyd Simmons; wives, Bell Simmons and Shirley Simmons; son, Mike Simmons; and grandson, Shawn Simmons.
Lonnie is survived by his son, Gene Simmons (Karen); grandsons, Korey (Ryan) and Denny (Michelle); great-grandsons, Cameron and Ethan Horton; daughter-in-law, Ann Simmons; granddaughter, Stephanie Simmons; stepchildren, Gary Ivey (Joy), Mike Ivey, and Renee Norris (Carroll); step-grandchildren, Angie Byrd (Scott), Garrett Ivey, April Moore, Michael Ivey (Tracie), and Hayden Norris; and five step-great-grandchildren.
Lonnie proudly served six years in the U.S. Army. He worked as a surveyor for Moorman Kizer & Reitzel Inc for 15 years before starting his own business, L.B. Landscaping, which he operated for 37 years. Later, he dedicated five and a half years to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office as a school crossing guard.
A devoted Christian, Lonnie had a deep love for the Lord. He enjoyed fishing and had a special fondness for seafood—especially oysters and crab legs.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Autumn Care for their love and compassionate care. Lonnie will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will take place at Cumberland Memorial Gardens.
