Lewis Edward Thompson, Jr., 95, of Fayetteville, passed away on May 17, 2024.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Jean Owens; daughter, Barbara Dean Kelsey; parents, Lewis and Ivory Thompson; brother, Manford Thompson; and sisters, Gloria Cameron and Sharon Ann Correll.
He is survived by his daughters, Edith Jane Morgan of Washington State, Shirley Ann Thompson, Lora Lee Suggs, and Jeanette Elanor Kinton; and his grandchildren, Sammy Daniels, Christina Elliott, Brison Lipscomb, Angel Clark, Barbara Riley, Danielle Kahlenbeck, Cliff Tedrick, Lewis Tedrick, Allison Kinton, Danny Nichols, Dee Dee Nichols, Michael Devita, and Carol Devita. He also leaves behind 28 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
Lewis enjoyed a variety of hobbies, such as playing guitar, golfing, gardening vegetables and flowers, feeding birds, watching westerns, drawing, reading, solving word puzzles, whittling, taking walks, and listening to country music. He was known for his strong will, honesty, sociability, candor, generosity, kindness, helpfulness, humor, and wit.
For 16 years, he diligently visited his wife's grave weekly, except during extremely bad weather.
He served in World War II and the Korean War, earning numerous military medals, including the Good Conduct Medal (three times), Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal (three Bronze Stars), Republic of Korea Citation, Presidential Unit Citation (three times), Sharpshooter, and Marksmanship Badge.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home from 12 to 12:45pm. A funeral service will be held in the chapel at 1pm with Donna Hendrix officiating. Burial to follow the service at Cumberland Memorial Gardens.
The family asks, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Kingdom Place Church, 2610 E 5th St Lumberton, NC 28358, in Lewis’ honor.
