John William Carberry, Sr., 79, died on April 26, 2026, in Fayetteville, NC after a lengthy battle with cancer.
John was born in the Fall of 1946 to Joseph Andrew Carberry and Mary Elizabeth Glines in Salem, New Hampshire. At different points in his life, he thought his birthday was in September, October and November…but eventually determined that he was born on November 27, 1946.
In his early adulthood, John and his wife moved to Fayetteville, NC after visiting an uncle who was stationed there and realizing that winter in the South was much better than winter in New Hampshire. They made Fayetteville their home and raised their children here.
John was a very skilled electrician who owned and operated JW Carberry Electric and later retired after working many years at the Crown Coliseum.
He was the proud Dad of twin sons, Joseph & John and daughter Michelle, a loving brother to his siblings Joseph & Marjorie and a doting son to his mother, Mary, who all at some point also moved to Fayetteville.
John was a pool shark in the APA, who also loved dancing & country music. He was an avid coin collector and had more state quarters than probably anyone you know. He was a lifetime NRA member and the son of a gunsmith. He gave many pets a loving home and was also a foster father to several children in the 80’s.
John leaves behind a legacy of never giving up, working hard, charity and quiet kindness to all who knew him, especially his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Marjorie Carberry. He is survived by his children Michelle Carberry of Fayetteville, NC who lived with and cared for him during a lengthy illness, John Carberry Jr of Fayetteville, NC and Joseph Carberry (Kristy) of Leesburg, GA. John is also survived by his brother Joe Carberry; the mother of his children, Sheila Kilbourne; his grandchildren, Dylan & Karoline and several nieces and nephews.
John will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
Burial will be at Cumberland Memorial Gardens, and a graveside service will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026 at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, since John was a big supporter of many charities, please consider a donation in his name to Disabled Veterans of America or your favorite charity.
