Joel Poor Obituary

Joel Edward "Joe" Poor, affectionately known as "Grumbles," passed away on August 14, 2025, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, at the age of 82, after courageously battling major health issues. Born on December 6, 1942, in Vinita, Oklahoma, Joe's journey through life was marked by unwavering devotion to his family, friends, faith, and country.

Joe was the cherished son of Cyril Cyanies Poor and Arleeta Elizabeth Hodge, both of whom preceded him in death, as did his beloved sister, Rev Jeanne Leggett. Joe is survived by his loving wife, Linda Poor of 40 years, and his devoted stepson, Allen Raynor. He will be lovingly remembered by his nieces Dina Fulcher (Louis "Brother" Fulcher), Denise "Cricket" Brewer, and Jeanne Leggett, and great nieces Billie-Faith and Arlee-Shay Fulcher. He also leaves behind his brother in law Reverend Charles Crumpler III and family, as well as several other great nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

Joe's story is one of service and achievement. In 1963, he proudly enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, answering his country's call with integrity and honor. Over the next twenty years, Joe built a distinguished military career, earning numerous commendations and decorations, including the Meritorious Service Medal; Air Force Commendation Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Air Force Longevity Service Award with Four Oak Leaf Clusters; Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm; Air Force Good Conduct Medal with One Silver Oak Leaf Cluster; Presidential Citation; and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor Service and numerous clusters. Throughout his career, Joe led by example, earning the respect of all who served alongside him.

After retiring from the Air Force, Joe continued to serve others as the founder of Safety Programs and Training. Through this endeavor, he developed instructional plans and provided training for numerous international and domestic companies, sharing his expertise and ensuring strict compliance with OSHA standards. His commitment to safety and education protected countless workers and made workspaces across the globe safer.

Outside of his professional life, Joe was an enthusiastic founding member of Kings Grant Golf Course, where he shared laughs and many rounds of golf with friends-his proudest moments coming during the seven holes-in-one he managed over the years, even as it took a playful toll on his wallet. Joe enjoyed peaceful days with Linda and their beloved pet squirrel, Ralph, ensuring Linda kept up with Ralph's care. He cherished family gatherings with his nieces and great-nieces, nephews and great nephews and loved tuning in to religious programs and singing along to television specials. His sense of faith guided him throughout his life and was reflected in his involvement with the Northside Supper Club and his steadfast commitment to his beliefs.

Joe's warmth, loyalty, and humor-along with his steadfast dedication to his family, friends, and community-leave a legacy that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He left all who knew him richer in love, laughter, and friendship—a legacy that will live on in their hearts forever.
