Jo Ellyn Fleishman Lawton, 77, of New Orleans, Louisiana, passed away on May 17, 2025, peacefully at home surrounded by family. Jo was born November 21, 1947, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the daughter of Nathan Fleishman and Ida Vatz (Fleishman) Brody. After growing up in Fayetteville, she attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned a bachelor’s degree.
Jo married Andrew Lawton on December 1, 1984, in Kinston, NC. They were married for 40 years and had 2 children and several bichon frises. In her early career, Jo worked for the federal government, primarily as a field agent with the National Labor Relations Board. After having children, Jo became a homemaker and spent much of her time volunteering at her children’s schools and the local temple.
Jo never met a stranger, and though she lived in many places over time, she always formed a strong community wherever she went. Jo especially loved cooking and entertaining, usually with enough food for at least double the people in attendance.
Remaining to cherish Jo’s memory are her spouse, Andrew Lawton; children, Nick Lawton (Elisabeth McGaw) and Elizabeth Lawton; and granddaughter Eloise Lawton. Preceding Jo in death are her parents, Nathan Fleishman and Ida Brody, and her sister Anita Fleishman. The Funeral services will be held on May 23, 2025, at noon at Cross Creek Cemetery in Fayetteville, NC.
Memorial donations in Jo’s memory may be directed to a charity of your choosing.
