Jimmy Edward “Zeke” Thompson, 83, of Fayetteville, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2025.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his father Claude Franklin Thompson; mother Gladys Long Thompson; and siblings Calvin Thompson, Charles Thompson, Jean Thompson Duncan, Peggy Thompson MacIntyre, John Thompson, Billy Joe Thompson, and Mary Frances Thompson.
Jimmy is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Eloise Todd Thompson, his son Mike Thompson, daughter-in-law Lucynda Autry Thompson, and grandchildren Charity McKenzie Thompson of Wilmington, Grace Lindsey Thompson and fiancé Harrison Camp of Chapel Hill, and Gabriel Ian Thompson of Fayetteville, his sister Nancy Thompson Copeland, sister-in-law Sharon Thompson and so many loved nieces and nephews.
Jimmy Thompson was born to Claude and Gladys Thompson on November 8, 1941. He graduated from Stedman High School in 1960. He starred as an athlete playing baseball, football, and basketball, earning the Athlete of the Year honor. After high school, he joined the Navy, serving 4 years between San Diego and Norfolk, and was at sea near Cuba during the Cuban missile crisis. He returned to Fayetteville where he joined the Fayetteville Fire Department in 1964. Jimmy met the love of his life, Eloise Todd, marrying in 1965. During the 70s, Jimmy transferred to Ft. Bragg Fire Department, where he retired as Chief of Fire Inspection in 1995. He spent many years coaching teams, especially little league baseball, and supporting youth particularly in the Hope Mills area. In retirement he enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, grilling, watching sports, especially Duke, and most of all his grandchildren. He loved and was loved by many. He made a difference and knew Jesus as his Lord and Savior.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at 2pm at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be held prior to the service from 12:00 to 1:45pm. Following the service, Jimmy will be laid to rest at Cross Creek Cemetery #3.
