Janet Roberta Harris Page Adkins Lee, affectionately known as “The Bird Lady” and “Plant Doctor,” passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 19, 2025, at 12:13 a.m., in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She had just celebrated her 76th birthday surrounded by her daughter, son-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family.
Janet was born on January 18, 1949, in Newport News, Virginia. She attended Huntington High School and later earned a degree in Criminal Justice from Thomas Nelson Community College. Her career was marked by hard work and dedication, culminating in her retirement from the City of Chesapeake.
Janet was a true force of nature—a “Bad Mama Jama” in every sense of the phrase. She had a green thumb that transformed any garden into a paradise and a gift for nurturing both plants and animals. Known for her love of birds, her knack for reviving struggling greenery earned her the title of “Plant Doctor.” Her happiest moments were spent outdoors, fishing, gardening, enjoying peaceful vacations in the mountains and spending time with her family.
Janet’s kindness and charisma were unmatched. She never met a stranger, always making those around her feel welcome and loved. Her vibrant personality and warm spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
She was married three times, to Joseph Page, Augustine Adkins, and Richard Lee, each contributing to her full and colorful life. Janet was predeceased by her parents, Janie and Robert Harris, as well as her sister, Shirley Harris.
She is survived by her siblings, Janice Harris and Robert Harris Jr.; her children, Angel Adkins and Kenneth Lee, her son-in-law, Aaron “Harun” Johnson; and her cherished grandchildren: LaTasha Vaughan (spouse Ronnie Vaughan Jr.), Tanisha Adkins (spouse Baryon Profit), DJ Elliott, and Aaron Chavis-Johnson. Her love and legacy live on through her five great-grandchildren: Amani Wing, Jaylen Arnold, Heaven Elliott, Alicia Vaughan, and Nylah Profit. Janet is also survived by her best friends, Art and Dale, who brought joy to her life. Janet lived a life of passion, strength, and generosity. She will forever be remembered as a loving matriarch, a devoted gardener and animal lover, and a dynamic woman who brought laughter and light wherever she went.
A celebration of Janet’s remarkable life will be held virtually, on January 26, 2025 at 3:30pm, https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82983239611.
Rest in peace, you were truly one of a kind—a “Bad MamaJama” through and through.
