James Charles Thompson, Jr. was born June 26, 1949, in Piney Grove, NC to James Charles Thompson, Sr. and Marzella Stephens Thompson. He was raised in Evergreen, NC with deep Godly roots, the eldest brother of 10 children. He grew up with his 9 siblings, Joanne, George, Della, Shirley, Patricia, Robert, Margie, Allen and Brenda. Affectionately known to family and friends as “Charles”, he was considered the “Patriarch” of the family. His cool, calm demeanor and consistent positive affirmations rooted in his love for Christ made everyone feel a deep kinship towards him. Charles earned his “Angels Wings” on Sunday June 20, 2021 (Father’s Day) and is now at rest with his Heavenly Father.

He was predeceased by his father, James Charles Thompson, Sr. and his Mother Marzella Thompson; his brother Allen R. Thompson, Sr. and sisters Joann McPhaul and Della Thompson.


James Charles Thompson, Jr. is survived by: his wife, Sun Thompson; children, Tonia Allen (Derek Allen), Tiwanda Griffin-Greer (William Greer), James Charles Thompson III, Jennifer McNair (Gill Smith, Jr), Edward McNair and Sabrina McNair; siblings, Shirley Thompson, Patricia McManus (Curt McManus), Margie Powell (Levi Powell), Brenda Westbrook (William Westbrook), Pearlina Thompson (Allen R. Thompson, Sr.), George Thompson (Pamela Thompson), and Robert Thompson (Crystal Thompson); grandchildren, Darius Allen, Dondre Allen, Aaron Griffin, Cristian Perez (Venuz Perez), Gena Smith, Jalen Smith, Brielle McNair; great-grandchildren, Adryan Griffin, Vision Perez and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family and friends.


Charles’s early ventures in life lead him to the DC Metro area for several years where he found his passion for cooking working as a head chef in the hotel industry. Ultimately migrating his way back to his native North Carolina roots, he ended up meeting and marrying his wife Sun Thompson on February 13th , 1996, in Fayetteville, NC. Together they formed a perfect union at Chang’s Fish Market working diligently side by side every day to serve the community the BEST Seafood in Fayetteville. So many people from Fort Bragg, the surrounding Fayetteville area and beyond come to get some of that good old fried fish from “Mr. Chang”. He and his wife Sun Thompson, as proprietors and operators of Chang’s Fish Market provide a lifeline for not only feeding the bellies of those that frequented their establishment but also sharing, Love, Compassion and Consult to all, young and old. Everywhere they go in this city they are Recognized, Respected and Beloved.


Charles was a gentle giant with a heart of gold that took pride in being the foundation for his family. “The Last of the Old Guard” and a “Pillar of the Community” he provided the best service possible to all his customers, who also became their friends at Chang’s.


In his spare time Charles enjoyed riding his motorcycle, working on his cars, motorcycle and home…but he most enjoyed serving his family and the community.
