James M. Liby, 73 years old, of Fayetteville, NC passed away on Friday, November 1, 2024.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Luster Liby and Dorothea Chaney, brothers, Rodney and Raymond Liby and his niece, Amy Conrad.
James is survived by his wife, Judy Liby; son, Matthew Liby; daughter, Angela Liby; son, Michael Liby and his wife, Katrina Liby; sisters, Rosemary Hunter and her husband, Doug Hunter and Brenda Rentfrow and her husband, Jack Rentfrow; grandchildren, Brennah Craig, Camron Suwarsky, Aaron Suwarsky, Ashley Harvey, Noah Liby, and Lauren Liby and his great grandchildren, Annabelle, Evelyn and Jackson.
Jim was deeply loved and returned that love to many people in his life. He was "Honey" to his wife of 54 years, "Dad" to his children, and "Papa" to almost everyone else. To his family and friends, "Papa" embodied a loving, gracious, joyful, caring, and protective presence, regardless of their age or biological relationship with him. But he was especially, endearingly, and overwhelmingly “Papa” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They adored their Papa, and he loved them with a depth that words could hardly capture—just ask him–or don’t; either way, he’d be sure to tell you at least ten times.
Jim will be remembered for always having a joke for the occasion (awkward, corny, clever or otherwise). If you spent any time with him, you were bound to notice one of his many quirks, from his meticulously kempt appearance to his "everything has its place" philosophy. He loved his ties, his church family, ministry, and above all, Jesus.
Jim served faithfully in the United States Air Force for over 22 years, retiring honorably as a Master Sergeant on December 31, 1995. Following his military service, he applied his gifts and talents as a private contractor for the United States Postal Service and Cape Fear Valley Hospital until his second retirement on March 20th, 2015.
Jim dedicated himself to serving as an elder at Helen Street Church of Christ and, until the time of his passing, as an elder and minister at Courtyard Church of Christ. A consummate family man and selfless friend who never met a stranger, Jim was loved by many and will be missed by countless people.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 8, 2024, from 5 to 7 PM at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held in the Rogers and Breece Chapel on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 3 PM with Minister Tiffany Dahlman, Courtyard Church of Christ. officiating.
