Fred Albert Green
July 31, 1948 ~ November 21, 2023 (age 75) 75 Years Old
Born in Oxford, NC, on July 31, 1948, Fred Albert Green was the second of four children of Ollie Mae Boger Green and Marshall Glen Green. His parents chose well in naming him after his two grandfathers. Fred had the steady, levelheaded approach of his maternal grandfather, Fred Boger, Sr., and the strong work ethic of his paternal grandfather, Gary Albert Green. Fred also had a love of sports, especially baseball. Whether it was sand lot games in the neighborhood, Little League or Pony League games, Fred loved playing baseball and the friendly competition with his siblings, cousins, and childhood friends.
Fred graduated from J.F. Webb High School in 1966 and attended East Carolina University from 1966 to 1970. At ECU he met Phyllis Leagans, a nursing student. They were married on August 2, 1970. After Phyllis received her nursing degree, they moved to Fayetteville, where Phyllis worked for the VA Hospital and Fred worked for Williams Printing Company. On December 28, 1975, their son, Christopher Todd Green was born. Fred later attended college at UNC-Pembroke. He received a degree in Business Administration in May 1978.
Fred and Phyllis loved camping, hiking, skiing and fishing. They often went backpacking and camping in the Appalachian Mountains. From 1972 forward, Fred owned at least one boat, mostly fishing boats. For about 20 years Fred captained the boat for a weekend fishing excursion to Harker’s Island with his father and two brothers, Lennie and Don.
Fred passed away in Fayetteville on November 21, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents and Phyllis. He is survived by his son, Chris and Chris’s wife, Lynda; his sister, Diane Green Weller; his brothers, Don and Lennie and Lennie’s wife, Carolyn, and many nieces and nephews.
The family requests that memorial donations in memory of Fred be made to the Appalachian Trail Conference, P.O. Box 807, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425.
