Estelle Carter Obituary

With hearts full of sorrow and gratitude, we celebrate the life of Estelle Bowden Carter, 75, A woman whose faith, joy, and boundless energy left an indelible mark on everyone she met. Estelle passed peacefully on August 30, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to The Lord and her family.

Born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Estelle was the eighth of nine children born to the late Woodrow Melvin Bowden Sr. and Maggie Ellen Bowden. Raised in Linden, NC, she grew up surrounded by the warmth of a large, close-knit family. Her childhood was filled with the simple joys of small-town life, and she carried those values with her throughout her journey.

Estelle graduated from Pine Forest Senior High in 1968, the same year she married her beloved Kenneth Carter on December 22nd. From that day forward, she remained faithfully by his side, building a life grounded in love, faith, and family. Estelle cared for Kenneth with quiet strength and unwavering devotion, always supporting him through life’s ups and downs. Their bond was one of deep respect and enduring affection—a true partnership that brought her joy and fulfillment every step of the way,

Estelle’s heart belonged wholly to her three sons—Dewey Carter (1970–preceded in death), KC Carter (1972), and Del Carter (1982). Her love for them was not just unconditional—it was radiant, fierce, and woven into every part of her being. To know Estelle was to know how deeply she cherished her boys. She spoke of them with such joy and pride that it lit up every room she entered. Whether in casual conversation or heartfelt reflection, she made sure everyone knew just how proud she was of the men they had become.

There was always a sparkle in her eyes—a visible, unmistakable gleam—whenever their names were spoken. It was the kind of light that only a mother’s love could ignite. Estelle found her greatest happiness in their laughter, their milestones, and their everyday joys. Watching her sons live fully and freely brought her immeasurable contentment, and she considered it life’s greatest blessing to walk beside them, cheering them on with unwavering devotion.

Estelle’s life was a living testimony to her faith. She and Kenneth ran one of the largest church bus ministries for Freedom Baptist Church, joyfully picking up children from all walks of life and bringing them to hear the Word. Later, she became a beloved Sunday school teacher, guiding young hearts toward Christ with patience and joy. Estelle has a special way of bringing the community together, especially the children. Once a week, her home would fill with laughter and excitement as the neighborhood kids gathered to learn the books of the Bible and memorize scriptures, Estelle made learning fun! Handing out little prizes to those who remembered their verses.

Her work extended beyond the church walls. Estelle served her community with grace and grit—first in the cafeteria at Hope Mills Middle School, then at Cape Fear Valley Hospital, where she drove the shuttle bus and later worked as a parking deck attendant. She adored these roles, not for the tasks, but for the people. Estelle never met a stranger. Her smile was an open door, and her conversations were a balm to the weary.

Estelle was preceded in death by her parents, Woodrow and Maggie Bowden; her sisters Helen Fish, Jean Johnson, Hazel Smith, Brenda McLean; and her beloved son Dewey Dwayne Carter.

She is survived by her devoted husband Kenneth Carter of Linden, NC; sons KC Carter and Del Carter of Fayetteville, NC; sister Dorothy McLean of Greenville, NC; brothers Woodrow Bowden Jr. (Evelyn), Wayne Benton (Carolyn), both of Fayetteville, NC, and Bill Bowden (Liz) of Linden, NC; and her cherished niece and “like sister” Diane Lowenstein of Hope Mills, NC. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and countless friends who were blessed by her presence.

Estelle lived life on the move—literally. She loved to travel, and her adventurous spirit meant you never quite knew where she’d be headed next. She didn’t let grass grow under her wheels, and she didn’t let sorrow take root in her heart. Her laughter was contagious, her faith unshakable, and her love immeasurable.

Few knew that behind Estelle’s radiant smile was a quiet battle with leukemia and bone marrow cancer. Through years of treatments, doctor’s appointments, and hospital stays, she remained unstoppable. Her strength was awe-inspiring. Even in the hardest moments, Estelle greeted life with grace, courage, and that signature smile that could light up a room.

To know Estelle was to know joy. To be loved by her was to be truly seen.
