Elizabeth “Betsy” Halsey Obituary

Elizabeth “Betsy” MacRae Halsey, 88, of Fayetteville, North Carolina died peacefully on May 27, 2024.
She was born February 22, 1936, to the late James MacRae and Dorothy Hendon MacRae. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 55 years, Charles Day Halsey, Jr.; brother, James Cameron MacRae and her sister, Marceline Broadfoot MacRae.
Elizabeth spent her formative years in Fayetteville, NC, where her father practiced law. Following her education at Holton-Arms School in Washington, DC, she embarked on a journey to New York City in 1956 to pursue her passion for acting.
Over a span of 25 years, Elizabeth's career in television and film carried her across the country, from the east coast to the west coast and back again. Her television repertoire boasted credits in notable series such as "The Verdict is Yours," "Route 66," "Surfside 6," "The Fugitive," "Gunsmoke," "Bonanza," "The Andy Griffith Show," and "General Hospital." However, she was most renowned for her portrayal of Lou Ann Poovie in "Gomer Pyle, USMC."
Elizabeth's filmography included roles in "Love in a Goldfish Bowl," "Everything’s Ducky," "The Incredible Mr. Limpet," and Frances Ford Coppola’s "The Conversation," alongside Gene Hackman. Remarkably, she held membership in the esteemed Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Following her retirement from television and film, Elizabeth often spoke of her most significant achievement: her work as a drug and alcohol counselor with the Freedom Institute in NYC.
In the late 1990s, Elizabeth and her husband, Charles, made the decision to depart from New York City and relocate to the serene mountains of North Carolina. After some years, they found themselves settling in Elizabeth's cherished hometown of Fayetteville. It was a dream come true for Elizabeth to return "home," and she and Charles were fortunate to spend their final years there together.
As a testament to her legacy, Elizabeth generously donated a trove of items chronicling her acting career to the UNC – Chapel Hill Southern Historical Collection housed in the Louis Round Wilson Library, where they remain to this day.
Elizabeth was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Fayetteville, NC.
She is survived by 5 stepchildren, Terry Halsey, Peter Halsey, Hugh Halsey, Cate Halsey, and Alex Halsey Topper. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Marie MacRae Sutherland, James C. MacRae, Jr., Samuel H. MacRae, Katherine MacRae Parnell, Julie Vallery Merrill, R. Colton Vallery, Jr., Carolyn Vallery Gore, Elizabeth C. Vallery, and many great nieces and nephews.
There will be a private memorial service at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fayetteville Animal Protection Society or to St. John’s Episcopal Church in Elizabeth’s honor.
