Dawn Lee Underwood, 59, of Fayetteville, NC passed away on March 27, 2021. Dawn was a proud veteran of the United States Army, retiring in 1997 after serving her country for nearly 16 years.
Fiercely independent and iron-willed, Dawn never backed down or compromised her principles. She was a straight shooter who loved sweet tea, Kool cigarettes, her kids, Westerns, and perpetually being at least 15 minutes late to everything (not necessarily in that order) and valued honesty above all else.
She was an incredibly proud mother, sister, aunt, daughter, grandmother, and friend. Dawn was a mother, not only to her biological children, but many other children that she provided love, support, and a home to over the years. Her passing has left a void in our family and she will be greatly missed.
Dawn was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel Edward and Mallie Faith Underwood. She is survived by her children, Malik Andre Bowers Underwood of Fayetteville and Mallie Danielle Underwood of Austin, TX; granddaughter, Jaslynn Malia Underwood; sister, Faith Danice Underwood of Durham; brother, Daniel Edward Underwood II of Burgaw; nephew, Devon Adam Campbell of Fayetteville, as well as many of her “adopted” children, including Kelly Miller and Demetrius Davis.
A private memorial service with military honors will be held at a later date.
