Darrell Myers Obituary

Darrell Dean Myers, 88, MSGT USAF (Ret.) went to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, January 14, 2023. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran and friend to many. Darrell was the youngest of five children born to Roy Myers and Myrtle Laird Myers of Hannibal, MO.

Darrell grew up learning automotive mechanics from his father who owned an automotive repair business. He joined the U.S. Air Force where he put his mechanical knowledge to work as a boat engine mechanic in the now deactivated Emergency Boat Rescue Squadron. His military career took him to CA, The Philippines, MI, FL (during the Cuban missile crisis), Greenland, WA, England, Thailand (during the Vietnam War) and to NC where he retired after serving our nation for more than 20 years.

Darrell completed an Associate Degree in Business from Fayetteville Technical Community College. He worked at Kelly Springfield Tire Plant before entering civil service.  He worked as an instructor at Fort Bragg's Auto Skills Center and then in Supply at Womack Army Hospital until he retired in 1999.

In 1954 while in training at Great Lakes Naval Base IL, Darrell met and married Donna Warnke of Tomah WI. The couple had four children in five years and made many moves together during Darrell’s time on active duty. After retirement from civil service, he managed the Bragg Blvd Flea Market, where Donna had an antiques and collectibles business that Darrell lovingly called her "museum." They were married for 54 years when she sadly passed away in 2008.

He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks for 52 years, serving in positions at local, district, state and national levels including Exalted Ruler of the Fayetteville Lodge and District Deputy to the Grand Exalted Ruler.

Darrell attended Arran Lake Baptist Church for eighteen years. An accomplished mechanic and avid reader, Darrell was a true UNC Tarheel fan. He loved the Air Force, the Elks, and most of all he loved his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and four siblings.

Darrell is survived by his son David Myers and wife Susie of Fayetteville NC; daughter Deborah Myers Nevarez Slesinski of Fayetteville NC; son Douglas Myers and wife Susan of Clayton NC; daughter Denise Myers Campbell and husband Michael of Wilmington NC; grandchildren Ian Nevarez, Chelsea Nevarez, Sarah Campbell Bunn, Thomas Campbell, and Patrick Myers; great-grandchildren Dean Nevarez, Madison Bunn and Logan Bunn.

The family will receive friends at 12:30 pm Saturday, January 28, 2023, at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home.  A celebration service of Darrell’s life will begin at 2:00 pm. Burial with military honors will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park.
