Clarence Douglas Maxwell Jr.

Clarence Douglas Maxwell, Jr., 81, passed away peacefully in his home on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 15, in Stedman, N.C., with his wife Marilyn by his side.

 He was born to Clarence Douglas Maxwell, Sr., and Valda Henderson Maxwell on Oct. 17, 1940, in Cumberland County. The oldest of four kids, Mr. Maxwell grew up in Stedman, N.C., and attended Stedman High School where he was a star athlete. He was most notably known for his days playing American Legion baseball alongside greats such as Calvin Koonce and Jimmy Bryant.

 Despite offers from professional ball clubs straight out of high school, he opted to attend Wake Forest University on a baseball scholarship. Mr. Maxwell transferred to St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C., where he was a triple threat - varsity football’s star quarterback, the leading scorer for varsity basketball and the star pitcher for varsity baseball. It was at St. Andrews where he met the love of his life, Sandra Summerville, whom he wed upon graduation in 1963 after earning a degree in business administration.

 He began his career as a juvenile rehabilitation counselor in Fayetteville, N.C., before attending law school at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1967. After completion, he and Sandra returned to Fayetteville, N.C. where he established his law practice.

They welcomed a son, Douglas, in 1974, and a daughter, Paige, in 1976.

 In addition to practicing law, he continued to play minor league softball through the early 1980s. An avid fisherman and golfer, he was a long-standing member of Highland Country Club, where he served several terms as president and excelled on the greens. He was, first and foremost, a doting father and husband. His kids were his world, and he served as coach for various sports his children participated in, as well as on the PTA for their schools. He was most happy when his children were happy. He would do anything in the world for them, and was always so proud and quick to share and show off photos, as well as his grandchildren when they came along.

 Years after Sandra passed away, he was fortunate to find another great love with Marilyn Hubbard, whom he wed in 2018.

 Those who loved him are brokenhearted and will miss him terribly. Mr. Maxwell is survived by his wife, Marilyn Maxwell of Stedman; his son, C Douglas Maxwell III, and two granddaughters, Catherine, and Charlotte, of Fayetteville; a daughter, Paige Barefoot, her husband, Kyle, and two grandsons, Zachary, and Lucas, of Raleigh; and a brother, Eddie Maxwell, of Fayetteville. Mr. Maxwell was preceded in death by his late wife, Sandra Maxwell; his parents, C.D. Maxwell, Sr. and Valda Maxwell; his sister, Teresa Nobles; a brother, Glenn Maxwell; and two infant daughters, Amy, and Tammy.

 Visitation will be at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home, Tuesday, January 25th, 2022, from 10:45-11:45am with the service immediately following at 12pm.
