Charles “Charlie” Woodrow Smith, Jr. passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, June 13, 2024, after a bout with cancer. He was 88 years old.
Charlie was born on February 4, 1936, in Wilmington to Virginia and Woodrow Smith of Fairmont, NC. He attended Porter’s Military School in Charleston, SC, and later played football at East Carolina University, where he completed all four years of his education and was a 4 year letterman.
It was at ECU that Charlie met his wife, Miriam, with whom he shared 68 wonderful years. He held various corporate positions with Allstate Insurance, Traveler’s Insurance, and Weyerhaeuser before dedicating the rest of his career to home building as a general contractor. He was a member of The Little Chapel on the Boardwalk.
Charlie had a passion for college football, the beach, boating, and beach music.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia, and Woodrow Smith. He is survived by his beloved wife, Miriam; children, Suzanne Huggins (Jim), Marte Ward (Jeff), Ginny Breece (Corey), and Bubba Smith (Connie); as well as his 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, all of whom cherish his memory.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 17, 2024, at Oleander Memorial Gardens at 12 PM.
