After graduating from Seventy-First High School, Charles served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1965. Charles served as a driver and dispatcher in France, Germany, and Washington D.C. Upon completion of his time in the military, he worked as a butcher with Winn-Dixie grocery stores and ultimately retired from the Cumberland County School Bus Garage in 2005.
