Bruce McClelland Obituary

Bruce Dana McClelland, 75, of Fayetteville, passed away on Monday, December 2, 2024, after a brief illness. He was born on September 8, 1949, in Cumberland County to the late John William McClelland and Florence Strickland.

A proud Army veteran, Bruce dedicated 20 years of service to his country, earning numerous medals for his exceptional contributions in the dental field and as a senior instructor in dental leadership development. After retiring from the military, Bruce worked for 10 years as a lead carpenter with Cumberland County Schools.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Catherine Beringer, and her husband, Clyde Beringer; and his mother-in-law, Louise C. Morton.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Nancy Lynn Henrickson McClelland; his sons, Bruce Dana McClelland II, John Wesley McClelland (Christi), and Jason Reid McClelland; his brother, Mark McClelland; niece, Renee Beringer; nephew, Kirk Beringer; brothers-in-law, Sam Henrickson (Kathy) and Jimmy Henrickson (Linda); and numerous other nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Bruce also leaves behind eight beloved grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many lifelong friends who were like family to him.

Bruce and Nancy were married on July 28, 1967, at Christ United Methodist Church, where they remained faithful members. Over the years, they served as deacons, Bible school teachers, and dedicated community members.

An avid outdoorsman, Bruce had a passion for training hunting dogs, fishing, and football (Bulldogs – coached by his son, Bruce “Coach Mac”). Above all, he cherished his family and was a friend to everyone he met. For Bruce, everything always came back to family—they were the most important thing in his life.

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 6, 2024, from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at Epicenter Church, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Mark Knight. Interment with military honors will take place on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bruce’s honor to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
