Army Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Charles L. Davis, Sr., 86, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 9, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Charles was born on May 20, 1938, in Follansbee, West Virginia, to the late Merle and Julia (Ryder) Davis. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, David Harris of O’Fallon, MO; his stepson, Billy Ivey; and several brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Lillie Mae Davis of Linden, NC; his son, Charles L. Davis, Jr., of Raeford, NC; and his three daughters, Mary Lynn and her husband Thomas Hilburn of Hope Mills, NC; Lorrain Harris of Belton, MO; and Norma and her husband Tony Tassler of Sanford, NC. He also leaves behind his stepson, Lawerence Ivey and his wife Sandra of Raeford, NC, along with a cherished legacy of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Charles dedicated 24 years of his life to honorable service in the United States Army, enlisting at the age of 17. Over his distinguished career, he served three tours in Vietnam and received numerous awards, reflecting his valor, skill, and dedication. Among his accolades were the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Mechanic Badge with Propeller Bar, Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal with a second award, Master Crewman Badge, National Defense Service Medal, RVN Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Meritorious Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal with eight awards, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and the Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
A proud lifetime member of the Mohawk Association, Charles exemplified the values of honor, courage, and commitment both during and after his military service.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home from 11 to 11:45 am. A funeral service will be held at 12 pm in the Rogers and Breece Chapel. Burial to follow the service at Lafayette Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations or memorials may be made to the Vietnam Veterans Association in his honor.
