Allen John Carter, 86, passed away on June 20, 2025, at Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his father, John George Carter; his mother, Cora Elizabeth Brown Carter; and his sister, Elaine Hunsinger. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Deborah Powers Carter; his daughters, Karen Elizabeth Chiavacci (John D.) and Laina Suzanne Carter Harvey (Robert D.); his grandchildren, Daniel Allen Carter, Sarah Diane Chiavacci, and Andrew David Chiavacci; his sister, Marilyn Carter Romich (Larry); his nieces, Michele Romich Gordon and Jeannine Lindsey; and several grand-nieces and nephews.
Allen was born on August 23, 1938, in Stroudsburg, PA. He graduated from high school in Binghamton, NY, and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served for 22 years, was a veteran of the Vietnam War, and served in four Special Forces Groups. He earned his Master Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, Thailand Parachutist Badge with Fourragère, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and several other medals. Before retiring from the Army, he earned his B.A. from Park College in Missouri, his M.B.A. from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK, and graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.
After retiring in 1978, he became Director of Admissions at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC, and later became Vice President at Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery in Fayetteville, NC, where he established the Vietnam War Memorial in 1992.
Allen was a North Carolina Realtor for many years. He was a Mason and a Shriner. He was also an avid pool player and a deer and game bird hunter. He was proud to serve his country and went beyond the call of duty in serving his family. We will meet again.
A private family funeral service will be held at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home, and interment will be at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
