1SG (Ret) Douglas Dwight Ledford, 74, of Newton Grove, passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2019 at Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital.
Douglas was born on May 13, 1945 in California. He was preceded in death by his parents Donald Duane Ledford and Josephine Blocker Ledford of Waycross, GA. and his four brothers.
Douglas is survived by his daughter, Allison Johnson and husband, Paul of Hope Mills; grandson, Zachary Johnson Thomas and Travis of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter, Savannah Johnson Helton Housman and husband, Bryce of Twentynine Palms, CA; sister, Betty Ann Metts of Blackshear, GA; three brothers, Reggie Ledford and wife, Pattie of Lee’s Summit, MO, Paul Ledford of Cummings, GA, and Mark Ledford and wife, Hazel of Houston, TX; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Sergeant First Class Douglas D. Ledford joined the Army on 08 August 1977 and retired on 31 January 1993 serving his country with honor and valor. During his career he received numerous decorations, medals, badges, and citations including:
ARMY SERVICE RIBBON, NATIONAL SERVICE MEDAL W/ BRONZE SERVICE STAR, OVERSEAS SERVICE RIBBON, ARMY GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, ARMY COMMENDATION MEDAL, ARMY ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL, NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICER PROFESSIONAL RIBBON, MERITORIOUS SERVICE MEDAL, VIETNAM CAMPAIGN MEDAL, VIETNAM SERVICE MEDAL, OVERSEAS SERVICE BARS, ARMED FORCES EXPEDITIONARY MEDAL, MASTER PARACHUTIST BADGE, SOUTHWEST ASIA SERVICE, VIETNAM CROSS GALLANTRY W/ PALM.
After retirement Douglas had more time to spend with his family, friends, and hobbies. He was an avid coin collector – always on the lookout for a wheat back penny or the elusive 1983 Lincoln double die penny and a voracious reader.
Douglas was a kind man who cherished his family, friends, and country. He will be dearly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
A Graveside Service will be held at 12 PM on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 10 - 11 AM prior to the service at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home.
