Oliver "Monk" Rudolph Matthews

Mr. Oliver "Papa Monk" Rudolph Matthews, 96, of Fayetteville went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 5, 2017.

Monk was born to the late Mary Agnes and John Fleet. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte, his four brothers, two sisters and three grandchildren.

Monk served in the US Army for four years. He went on to serve his community for 32 years with the Fayetteville Fire Department. Prior to his retirement he earned the rank of Captain at the Central City of Fayetteville Fire Department.

Monk was a man that was respected and loved by all that knew him. He will be deeply missed by many and especially missed by his five children, Sylvia Johnson and husband, Rennie of Hope Mills, Gloria Driggers and husband, Tom of Hope Mills, Debbie Edwards of Fayetteville, Michael Sessoms and wife, Beverly of Fayetteville and Janice Hammond and husband, Bob of Hope Mills. His big hugs will be missed by his 19 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, 15 great great grandchildren; and a special niece, Donna Bates and husband, Ricky of Fayetteville; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 1 pm Saturday, July 8, 2017 in Jesus First Church with Rev. Tom Corney and Rev. Gary Levine officiating. Burial to follow in Cross Creek Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6 pm to 8 pm Friday, July 7, 2017 at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home.
