Maria Smith Obituary

On Sunday July 1, 2018, at the age of 94, Maria Smith passed away peacefully at home.  She joined her beloved husband of 63 years on his birthday.

She was born the youngest of three children, on March 25, 1924 in Coburg, Germany. In 1949, she met and married Harold L. Smith, a young Army soldier stationed near by.   The years that followed brought five children and many moves throughout the US and abroad. Finally settling and making a home in Fayetteville in 1964 and this has been her home ever since.  

She lived a long, wonderful life excelling in sewing, knitting, cooking, baking and caring for her animals.  She was very involved in the local German club, making many life long friends.  Her connection to Germany, its history and traditions, was very important to her and she continued this through her local German friends and regular visits back to her hometown in Germany.

Maria is survived by her children, Reta Walsh of Raleigh, Gary Smith and wife, Mary Ann Smith of Fayetteville, Monica Stokes of Fayetteville, Bryan Smith of Fayetteville, and Tanja Couture and husband, Daren of Charlotte; grandchildren who were such a special part of her life, Brandon Walsh and wife, Catrin, Nicole Morgan and husband, Walt, Carmen Webb and husband, Josh, Anthony Smith, Bryan Jo Smith, Jessica Biggins and Skylar Couture; and five great-grandchildren she was blessed with, Kate and Lucy Morgan, Keenan and Jonah Walsh and Riley Webb.  

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m.Tuesday July 3, 2018, in the chapel at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends in the parlor at the funeral home from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service.
