Janie Catherine (Sessoms) Smith

Janie Sessoms Smith, 82, of Fayetteville died Saturday, December 29, 2018. She was born in Cumberland County on October 15, 1936. She married Gilbert “Gip” Smith on November 10, 1957. Mrs. Smith worked for the Social Security Administration for 17 years and helped manage the family farm on River Road.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Arthur and Annie Hodge Sessoms; her sister, Edith Fournier; and three brothers: Curtis Glenn Sessoms, Wingate Sessoms and Fairley Sessoms.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Gilbert Smith, of the home; daughter, Sally Smith Shutt and husband, Jim, of Wade; two sons, Mark Gilbert Smith Jr., of Fayetteville and Nathan James Smith and wife, Nellie Jo, of Fayetteville; two brothers, James Arthur “J.A.” Sessoms and LeRoy McFayden Sessoms, both of Fayetteville. Five grandchildren are left to cherish her memory: Casey Shutt Hoblet and husband, Justin Hoblet, of Gig Harbor, Washington; Meredith Shutt and fiancé, Brett Beery, of Allen, Texas; Noah Smith of Fayetteville; and Tyler and Natalie Smith of Fayetteville. The Smith family thanks Damon Schewe for his devotion to our family above and beyond the call of duty.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2019, at Lebanon Baptist Church with Dr. John Campbell officiating.  Burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019, at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home.
