Wanda Kay (Carver) Thrash

Wanda Kay Thrash left this world peacefully in her sleep on November 3rd. She was holding her husband’s hand and surrounded by her loving family at her home in Eastover.. 

Kay was a lifelong resident of the Fayetteville area who chose the small community of Eastover to raise her family in 1979.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Sidney Thrash. Kay and Sidney celebrated their forty-fifth wedding anniversary on October 29th. Kay and Sidney had four children. She was preceded in death by their infant daughter, Christina Marie and looked forward to their heavenly reunion. Kay is survived by three sons and their chosen loves and eleven grandchildren. Her oldest son Neal Mason and fiance Amanda Brown of Eastover, number two son Michael Thrash of Fayetteville, and her baby, Jason Thrash and wife Jana of San Diego, California. Kay’s family has grown throughout the years to include eleven grandchildren: Danielle Mason of Hope Mills, Joey Waugaman and Audrey Waugaman of Camden, Kaleigh Mason of Wade, Brian Waugaman of Eastover, Nate Mason of Wade, Brianna Thrash, Jacob Thrash, Brandon Thrash, Layden Hernandez and Sofia Hernandez all of San Diego, California. Kay is also survived by her loyal sister, Yvonne Lambert and sister-in-law Linda Alkove of Kissimmee, Florida. 

Wanda Kay graduated from Pine Forest High School in 1965 and enjoyed the fellowship of her fellow alumni as they gathered for lunches and dinners throughout the year. Nursing was Kay’s chosen adult profession, and she retired from nursing in 1996. She dedicated her nursing career to the comfort and care of the elderly through long-term care. She considered it a blessing to care for people in their final years. Kay was an active member of the Silver Sneakers of the Fayetteville YMCA and did her best to never miss a birthday luncheon or a bus trip. She was also an active member of the Fayetteville Sail and Power Squadron where she shared her love of boating and the water with so many others. She served as the group’s Historian for many years and provided the outgoing Commanders a scrapbook of his/her year of service. 

Kay was a remarkable wife to her Sidney, a fierce mother to her boys, a spectacular Nanny to her grandchildren, a formidable sister to her siblings, and a committed friend to all who knew her. 

A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home on November 10th at 6:00 pm. The family will receive visitors in the parlor the hour prior to the service.
