Gary Marcus Betterton, 77, of Fayetteville NC, passed away Sunday, Nov. 26th at his home. A celebration of life service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 3rd at Freedom Biker Church in Fayetteville. Pastor JD Tew will be officiating and Gary will receive full military honors.
Gary was a native of Alabama, born to Reece and Laura Betterton in 1940. He graduated from Hazel Green High School in 1958 and immediately joined the U.S. Army. In 1965, Gary married Marilyn, his wife of 32 years, and had two daughters, Laura and Stacey. Gary was foremost a Patriot who selflessly devoted his life to the service -- a dedicated Green Beret, serving two tours in Vietnam. The epitome of the Quiet Professional, Gary retired as Sergeant Major in 1988 after having served his country well. Over the next several decades he continued his commitment to the Special Forces Association and served as the Chapter 1-18 Vice President and President before serving as the National President.
He was an avid coin collector, enjoyed history and visiting civil war sites, metal detecting, scuba diving and boating in his youth. His later years were happily spent riding the freeway with his brothers and sisters of the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association and embracing his family at the Freedom Biker Church.
Gary is survived by two daughters, Laura Golightly and CW3 Stacey Jaffett; his sisters, Dale Jenkins of Huntsville, AL and Shirley Mathieson of Ballston, NY; along with an extended family and loving circle of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ralph Betterton, sister Sandy Betterton, and his cherished partner in life, Marian Sosniak.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the causes that were important to Gary: the SFA Chapter 1-18, Fisher House Foundation, and to the Freedom Biker Church.
