Ret. Master Sgt. Eugene Wheeler HawksAugust 29, 1927 ~ May 6, 2017 (age 89)
Eugene Wheeler Hawks, Retired Master Sgt. USAF, 89, of Fayetteville passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the VA Medical Center surrounded by his loved ones.
Mr. Hawks served in the Navy Seabees, the Army Air Corp and then served over 26 years in the Air Force where he was a fire chief before retiring in 1971. He was a veteran of both World War II and the Vietnam War. He loved animals, cooking, playing cards and watching Nascar. On the weekends he enjoyed spending time outdoors and spent many years with his family and friends at his favorite place, Kerr Lake.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 pm Thursday, May 11, 2017 in Christ United Methodist Church with Pastor Don Warren officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 10, 2017 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Frieda Hawks of the home; sons, Eugene W. Hawks, Jr. (Lorrie) of Fayetteville and Daniel R. Hawks (Carolyn) of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; daughter, Cheryl Hawks Gore (Brian) of Fayetteville; a half brother, Gary Taylor of Kernersville; eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his father Arthur Hawks; mother Dorma Hawks Taylor; son, William Clinton Hawks; half brother, Jesse Ray Taylor and sister, Dorothy Snody.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 3101 Raeford Rd. Fayetteville, NC 28303.
