Keith Andrew Bates, Sr.

Retired 1st Sgt. Keith Andrew Bates, Sr., 55, of Fayetteville passed away peacefully on Friday, October 17,2014 in his home.

He  was born in Fort Meade, MD on December 25, 1958 to the late Ernest and Florence Bates.

Keith  served in the US Army for 20 years from 1983-2003 and retired as a 1st Sgt.  Throughout his career he served multiple deployments and was awarded many awards including the Bronze Star.  Keith was very active in his community.  He served on the Fayetteville City Council from 2005-2013 and was awarded the Order of the Longleaf Pine in May of 2014.  Keith was also elected as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Armed Services Mutual Benefits Association in 2014.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Margaret; sons, Keith A. Bates, Jr. and wife, Alicia of Fayetteville, Dannie A. Bates and wife, Michelle of Raeford; one grandson, Andrew Scott Bates of Fayetteville; brother, Allen Bates of Hope Mills; sisters, Lesa Tcherkezian of Charlotte, Karen Franke of Dallas, GA, and Dana Moonen of Fayetteville.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at Village Baptist Church with Dr. Bruce Martin officiating.
